Birthdays, Wimbledon, Disappointments…

Tuesday was a wonderful day. We went by train, and at the final tube station, there was artificial grass painted with tramlines to welcome us! There was a good natured atmosphere, full of anticipation as the crowds walked down the hill to the venue. I have to say Wimbledon copes very well with the hoardes of people it allows in. The flowers were stunning, the food venues attractive, and the loos kept spotlessly clean. We had great seats on Court 2, Very close to the action! We watched an excellent ladies doubles. The winners are now in the final, followed by an entertaining invitation match featuring James Blake and Mark Philipoussis, who were full of fun! We then caught a mixed doubles quarter final, watching the Australian pair knock out the Brits who had earlier beaten Jamie Murray and Venus Williams, but who were beaten by Neil Skupski and partner in the final. We spent some time on Henman Hill watching the Norris match. There was hardly an inch of ground to spare! And finally watched a ladies doubles with Kim Kljistrrs and Martina Hingis, which was similarly good natured and enjoyable. As we walked back towards Centre Counrt, the roar of the crowd told us that Norris had won. It was a lovely way to spend a birthday, and good to have the day with Jane.

I drove home on Wednesday. It was an easy journey. Good to see the roses burgeoning in the garden, to unpack and to get on top of the post.

On Thursday I led our Christian Meditation Group and then allowed myself an hour or so sitting in the sunshine, which had finally graced us with its appearance. The reason I had the time to do this was the very disappointing news that the big concert I was due to sing in on Saturday, with rehearsals on Thursday and Saturday afternoon, was cancelled. I am so very sad about this. I was loving singing the Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony. Rehearsals have been spine tingling. And we had booked Roderick Williams to sing the solo too! But during a rehearsal with orchestra on Sunday, which I had missed thanks to my holiday, Covid was unleashed, and has struck down swathes of both choir and orchestra. Such a shame. And a nightmare for our lovely conductor and his team. I desperately hope it can be rescheduled one day.

Anyway, it has allowed me a little space to watch a bit more tennis, and I had a lovely walk with Jean today. For all that Bavaria is so very pretty, it was wonderful to be out and about in the lakes! Catherine sadly had a positive covid test and so was unable to join us. I hardly know any 'Covid virgins' now.
