A rest day!

A lovely day today. Relaxed pace, and wonderful experiences.

We were able to have a later breakfast, and then set off in wonderfully sunny weather towards the Leckfall water falls. It was a delightful walk through this pretty old town, and past the monastery, and over the bridge over the Leck River. The water was beautifully blue and it was great to see the mountains rising majestically, and for once not cloaked in cloud! We walked along the road to the waterfalls....man made, but falling into the deepest gorge. After this we found a shaded woodland path.It was a great place for children with wooden plank bridges, areas for paddling, seesaws etc. We reached the forest centre, and walked along the rope bridges way up in the treetops. It was stunning. So wonderful to be up there in the peace of the leaves and branches, listening to the birdsong, and catching Views of the mountains. We were lesisurely and just absorbed the experience.

It was hot, so we stopped for a cool drink and then walked back. As we walked along the pavement an elderly man on a motorbike stopped to tell us of a path which would take in 14 chapels, and would afford views of the castles, mountains and lakes. It sounded wonderful, but we wanted first to have lunch and visit the Benedictine Monastery. We had a good salad in the Italian restaurant opposite the Monastery. Jean enjoyed a blackcurrant tart. And then we headed for the monastery.

Lots to see here: Old and original stonework, the Anna Chapel which has the oldest dance macabre in Germany, but is also a baroque chapel, the cloisters, the library, and lute and violin workshops. While we were in the library, a sudden electric storm began and huge hailstones began to fall, crashing into the windows and covering the grass, where we had all too recently sat, moving our chairs into the shade to keep out of the hot midday sun. It was not an experience I have ever had before. Crazy weather.

We had enjoyed the monastery but the rain was now torrential. Jean and I both had umbrellas with us, so Dick and I made a dash under my brolly and Jean and Cathy under Jean's, and we hopped back over the road to the same cafe and enjoyed tea and shared some cake! We went back to the hotel once the rain had stopped!

Delicious food....though way too much of it for me and Jean! But a very very happy evening. Now we are packed and ready for our move to Oberammergau. The weather forecast is not good. Rain and cool temperatures are promised. But the show will go on! Hoping we don't get hailstones when we are out and about! They could cut you to shreds!
